Hurricane Florence is intensifying and expected to transform into a major hurricane as it barrels toward the southeastern US coast, where forecasters expect a life-threatening storm surge, major flooding and damaging winds this week. The forecast continues to call for Florence to slam ashore as a major - Category 3 or stronger - storm before weakening slightly, but still as hurricane, as it heads inland.
The center of Florence was located about 1 100km southeast of Bermuda, the NHC in its 03:00 GMT on Monday advisory.
Henry McMaster issued a mandatory evacuation ahead of Hurricane Florence for all coastal counties in SC on Monday, including Beaufort, Colleton, and Jasper counties. The move will allow the state to use the National Guard for preparations and recovery if necessary. "Somewhere along the Carolinas will see a surge, we just don't know where yet", he said. Drawing energy from the warm water, it could have top sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (209 kph) or more by Tuesday, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.
And with little wind shear to pull the storm apart, Florence's hurricane wind field was expected to expand over the coming days, increasing its storm surge and inland wind threats, and raising the likelihood of life-threatening freshwater flooding. That means sustained winds of at least 130 miles per hour and expectations of catastrophic damage, the hurricane center says. The last storm to hit the Carolinas as a category 4 was Hurricane Hugo almost 30 years ago in 1989.
"North Carolina is taking Hurricane Florence seriously, and you should, too", Cooper said. Even in areas far from the coast, he added, parts of North Carolina and Virginia could see rain totals of 10-15 inches over the next seven days. The congressional delegation wrote in support of Gov. Ralph Northam's request that a federal emergency be declared.
