  • 'Cluster' of cases of Legionnaires' disease confirmed in Surrey

Tenants say they are frustrated with the city's Department of Health for not telling them sooner about two cases of Legionnaires' disease in their building.

A hotel in a popular New Hampshire beach town was ordered to take "immediate steps" to address its water system after it tested positive for bacteria that may have caused a Legionnaires' outbreak that sickened 14 people and caused one death.

Officials said tenants can still use and drink water "but tenants at higher risk of getting Legionnaires' disease will be advised to take additional precautions".

"What we're trying to identify right now is what that potential source may have been, where they may have contracted the bacteria", Dr. Aamir Bharmal, a health officer with Fraser Health, told CTV Vancouver.

Two years ago, health departments reported about 6,100 cases of Legionnaires' disease in the United States, the CDC said.

As a precautionary measure, DPHS has closed the hot tub spas at the Sands Hotel and the Harris Sea Ranch Motel because hot tub spas, in general, are a known source of the bacteria that causes Legionnaire's. Most people get better with early treatment, although they may need to be hospitalized.

Another disease which has made its presence felt for quite some time in the United States is the one caused due to West Nile virus, which has resulted in around a dozen communities in Boston-area being listed as high-risk, after a fourth-case of the virus was discovered.

Legionnaires' disease symptoms are very similar to other types of pneumonia and can include a cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches. The symptoms show 2 to 10 days after the bacteria exposure. The disease is not contracted through swimming or drinking water.
