  • Tropical storm Kirk is forecast to strike Barbados at about ...

Kirk reached tropical storm-strength Saturday and is cruising west at about 18 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center said Sunday morning.

The current forecast track has Kirk reaching the Lesser Antilles late this week as a weakening Tropical Storm.

Subtropical Storm Leslie formed around 11 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Hurricane Center. The depression had been approaching the Lesser Antilles but thanks to hostile winds only a cyclonic wisp of clouds remained. National Weather Service advisory, Kirk's sustained winds measured 40 mph and extended 70 miles north of the storm's center. Kirk's forecast of continued westward movement and strengthening early in the week hasn't changed.

Florence was a hurricane in the Atlantic before it weakened to a tropical storm last week.

Forecasters say the system is likely to dissipate within a day or two. Forecasters say shower and thunderstorm activity continues to become better organized near the center of a low pressure system located about 500 miles south of the southern Cabo Verde Islands, and a tropical depression appears to be forming.

Almost all of the North Carolina and SC coasts are included in the cone of uncertainty for the storm and the latest model Saturday night showed the storm making landfall in Wilmington.

Kirk is "moving rapidly" to the west over the eastern "tropical Atlantic" Ocean, according to the NHC at 11 a.m. The storm will pick up speed over the next few days and likely will strengthen as it moves westward.

The other, located about 1,000 miles west-southwest of the Azores, has a 60 percent chance of formation. This is due to a cold front moving through and stalling just to the south of us. The west coast sea breeze developing and mixing with the easterly winds will give us a good chance for showers during the latter part of the day. Then an nearly due west path is forecast through the rest of the weekend and through early next week.
