Gordon formed into a tropical storm near the Florida Keys early Monday as it moved west-northwest at 16 miles per hour.

The storm was forecast to become a Category 1 hurricane by the time it makes landfall on the central Gulf Coast Tuesday evening, likely between Mobile and New Orleans, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Gordon formed into a tropical storm near the Florida Keys early on Monday as it moved west-north-west at 16mph. The last hurricane to strike the US was Nate last October, coming ashore in Biloxi with 75 miles per hour (120 kph) winds.

In anticipation of heavy rains, the Flood Protection Authority-East (FPA) has closed 21 floodgates on the Lake Borgne Surge Barrier near New Orleans, according to a press release. Beachgoers in the area were warned Wednesday of risky rip currents that prompted red-flag warnings, meaning it was illegal to enter the Gulf of Mexico.

FRIDAY - MONDAY: As Gordon moves west, slightly more typical weather returns to our area. Tornadoes are also possible through Wednesday night over MS and western Alabama, it added.

As Gordon crosses the Florida peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico it is expected to gradually strengthen during the next 48 hours.

It promised more of the same on a forecast track expected to take it northeast into Arkansas, which was forecast to get heavy rain from the system by Wednesday night.

The storm was gaining strength and was expected to become a hurricane as it comes ashore late on Tuesday near the border between Louisiana and MS, and drop as much as 20cm of rain in some areas of the US South still reeling from hurricanes a year ago.

With strong winds pushing against the coast, there is the concern of a 3-5 foot storm surge in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency Monday and said 200 National Guard troops will be deployed to southeastern Louisiana.

Forecasters say little change in strength is expected in coming days and no coastal watches or warnings are in effect.

While the 2018 hurricane season has been a quiet one for the Cape Fear coast so far, September - and even October (Hurricane Hazel in 1954) - has historically been a busy time for tropical weather systems to menace the Wilmington area.

Panama City and much of the Panhandle could see between 1.00 and 1.5 inches of rain through Thursday. Some intensification is expected before it makes landfall tonight, possibly as a hurricane, in or near South Mississippi. Storm surge warnings have been issued there, as well.
