Trump attacks Sessions, suggests Justice Dept. should consider politics when making decisions

  • US President Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday launched a fresh attack on Attorney General Jeff Sessions, accusing him of jeopardizing the chances of re-election for two Republican congressmen by bringing criminal charges against them just before the midterm elections.

Chris Collins of NY was indicted on insider trading charges, which he has denied, while Duncan Hunter of California was accused with his wife of using campaign donations for personal purposes.

Contrary to Trump's claim that both indictments were the result of "long-running Obama-era investigations", the DOJ did not open its investigation into Hunter until March 2017, after Trump took office.

Trump has also repeatedly complained publicly and privately over Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the federal investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation because he'd worked on Trump's campaign.

Senator Jeff Flake, a Republican, said on Twitter the statement was "not the conduct of a President committed to defending and upholding the constitution, but rather a President looking to use the Department of Justice to settle political scores". "It is the duty of the Justice Department to prosecute crimes when they find them and to bring indictments when a grand jury has decided there's enough evidence there".

Sen Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) tweeted that Trump was "looking to use the Department of Justice to settle political scores". Duncan Hunter of California and Chris Collins of NY.

A spokeswoman for Mr Sessions declined comment, and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The president was apparently referring to Congressmen Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and Chris Collins (R-NY).

The investigation into Mr Hunter began under the presidency of Barack Obama, but the Collins inquiry was launched a year ago.

"This tweet alone may be an impeachable offense", Toobin said on CNN's "New Day".

The president has repeatedly denied there was any collusion between his campaign and Moscow. The Dems all hated him, wanted him out, thought he was disgusting - UNTIL I FIRED HIM!

Allies, including Republican members of Congress, have long advised Trump that firing Sessions - especially before the November midterm elections - would be deeply damaging to the party.

A few minutes after the tweet on Sessions, Trump added a second tweet attacking former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James B. Comey, asserting that Democrats did not like Comey until Trump fired him in 2017.
