Trump, Trudeau upbeat over new NAFTA deal

  • Gold catches late NY bid on NAFTA headlines, but . . .

The renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement continued on Tuesday, as Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland sat down with United States trade officials and struck a positive tone, speaking with reporters.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland speaks to the media as she arrives at the Office Of The United States Trade Representative, Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, in Washington.

The Canadian dollar edged up 0.07 cents to 0.

"Many have seen this market over the last few decades, from an American point of view, as just being off the table", Reed said in an interview with Global's "The West Block" that aired Sunday morning.

His comments echoed Trump, who said on Tuesday that while Ottawa wants a deal, he could go either way, depending on what concessions will come from the talks.

A member of an influential Congressional panel - and a Donald Trump supporter - said in a Canadian interview that providing American dairy farmers with more access to the Canadian market may appease the president. And he has framed NAFTA as a disaster and an agreement that has brought "the USA ... decades of abuse" at the hands of Canada.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said the mechanism is crucial to a new NAFTA, but Mexico already has agreed to drop it.

One of the issues for Canada in the revised deal is the US effort to dump the Chapter 19 dispute resolution mechanism that hinders the United States from pursuing anti-dumping and anti-subsidy cases. But he said the Liberals plan to be flexible on other issues in order to get a deal. Rather, they're following the standard political economist playbook: protect those industries and sectors that can help carry Trudeau to another win in the federal elections 13 months from now.

Graves, the president of Unifor Local 88, which represents about 2,800 workers at the General Motors CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, said NAFTA negotiations, tariffs on steel and aluminum and the ability of GM plants in Mexico to produce the same vehicle as his plant - the popular Chevrolet Equinox SUV - are a worry.

"I think we understand there are certain issues on which we will need to compromise", one of the sources said when asked about increased dairy access for the USA industry.

With the Mexico deal in hand, and Trudeau publicly indicating that Canada's red-line issues are Chapter-19 and cultural industries, the Americans have considerable leverage, he added.

"Maybe that helps us all put into perspective the negotiations that we're having - and also put into a little bit of historical perspective the importance and the significance of the relationship between Canada and the United States", she said of the anniversary.

"We've taken those hits for team Canada, and we are determined that there be no further concessions on dairy", said David Wiens, vice president of the Dairy Farmers of Canada. Trump wanted changes that would destroy family farms across Canada, he said.
