  • Homes flooded by Hurricane Florence in Wilmington North Carolina

Rain, wind and rising floodwaters from Hurricane Florence swamped the Carolinas early on Friday as the massive storm crawled toward the coast, threatening millions of people with record rainfall and punishing surf.

Adding to the storm stress is uncertainty about where exactly Florence will make landfall, after a shift in its track put more of the Southeast in danger.

A new 5-minute video from the space station shows Florence coming ashore in the USA for the first time.

As the storm moves inland, forecasters warned, the surge could cover all but a sliver of the Carolina coast under as much as 11 feet of ocean water, and days of downpours could unload more than 3 feet of rain, touching off severe flooding.

NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold also captured Florence making landfall from his spot on the orbiting outpost.

At 7 a.m., the center of the eye was located about 5 miles (10 kilometers) east of Wilmington, moving west at 6 mph.

As Florence moves further inland over the coming days, the storm is expected to gradually weaken.

And the storm is still expected to bring catastrophic winds, rain, storm surges and flooding, the National Hurricane Center briefing said.

Governor Cooper said there have been "several hundred" rescue operations and "there are still some people they need to get to".

The NHC described Florence as a "slow mover" and said it had the potential to dump historic amounts of rain on North and SC, as much as 40 inches (one meter) in some places.

"We've got nearly 20,000 people in 157 shelters", Cooper said. His mom remembers Hurricane Hazel, when the water did not rise as high as his fifth step, where it was Thursday night. Flash flooding and river flooding is likely, they warn.

Meteorologist Ryan Maue of weathermodels.com said Florence could dump a staggering 18 trillion gallons of rain over a week on North Carolina, South Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Maryland. Wind gusts of 105 miles per hour - the highest recorded since 1958 - were reported in Wilmington Friday morning.

The now Category 1 storm's intensity diminished as it neared land, with winds dropping to 90 miles per hour (135 kph) by nightfall. Water kills more people in hurricanes than wind, and he said it will still be an extremely risky storm for rain and storm surge.

A video of a live segment of him in Wilmington, North Carolina, shows him bracing his feet on where he's standing, presumably so he won't be blown over during his segment.

Meanwhile, CBS affiliate WNCT reports that more than 60 people, including an infant and children, were rescued from a hotel in Jacksonville, N.C. after strong winds threatened the structural integrity of the building.

Monica Scott, 34, of Wilmington, says she's keeping her fingers crossed that her home is fine.

Early on Friday, South Carolina emergency officials said there was still time, "but not a lot of time" for people to leave flood-prone areas.

On Thursday evening, the Neuse River burst its banks which caused rapid flooding in New Bern, North Carolina, forcing residents to flee as the entire city lost power.
