A fifth of employees attended work suffering mental health issues past year

  • The wide-ranging report did not give the breakdown of the potential $16 trillion economic impact it estimated by 2030

Over the past few years, we've seen an influx in people speaking, writing, and educating others about their own mental health issues. Less than one percent of global aid is donated to mental health; even in developed countries, the issue is dismissed.

"Mental health is a very important issue and we should try to help young people to live happier lives without worry", said Seb, who raised more than £400 for Young Minds through a cake sale and by selling yellow headbands.

"Foolish Optimism" follows three young people with mental health problems, living across Scotland, and its premier coincided with World Mental Health Day on Wednesday.

Mental Illness affects far more people than many people realize.

The economic and social cost of mental health problems in the United Kingdom amounts to more than £100bn every year.

Social shifts, decent education, and pop culture have all played vital roles in the normalisation of mental health problems and the prevalence of these conditions in every day life, meaning that technically, there's never been a better time to talk.

Half of mental health disorders arise before the age of 14, but most cases are not detected or treated until much later, according to the latest data from the World Health Organization.

Just as the resilience and resourcefulness of young people is often fantastic, what is equally incredible are the levels of distress we as a society expect children and young people (and their families) to tolerate.

Young people continue to be judged on academic performance with little regard for their mental health.

While addressing Parliament earlier this year, Professor Melvyn Freeman, chief director of non-communicable diseases at the Department of Health, said it was important to recognise the need for care in mental health.

More than a fifth (22%) of employees went into work when feeling mentally unwell a year ago, according to research by Canada Life Group Insurance. "Due to an increase in the body-dissatisfaction, they develop low self-esteem leading to mental turmoil among the younger generation and women".

According to the 2011-2012 National Survey of Children's Health, results showed that 1 out of 7 American children ages 2 to 8 years old had a diagnosed mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder.

"It is positive that mental health is being publicly talked about and I am confident that we are moving in the right direction which will ultimately benefit every athlete, coach and support staff member working in Olympic and Paralympic sport".

Prof Vikram Patel of the Harvard Medical School, joint lead editor, said mental ill-health caused "colossal human suffering" and was responsible for substantial numbers of deaths that are attributed to other causes.

As a mental health nurse, it's just you.
