At least eight students have been killed and 16 more are missing after flash floods swept away their bus near the Dead Sea in Jordan, officials say.

Relatives of those affected have been gathering outside a local hospital, waiting for news.

Heavy rain has been sweeping the region for several days.

It was reported that Jordanian authorities requested Israeli assistance in the search and rescue effort.

The Prime Minister also said the school and Ministry of Education had agreed conditions about the trip which were not adhered to, publishing a photo of a document purporting to show such correspondence.

"Thank God we managed to save 13 people without any injuries", Mr al Sahraa said.

"The number of those killed in the flash flood is expected to increase because many were reported to have been swept away by the raging water", the official said. The arid region, the world's lowest point at about 1,400ft (430m) below sea level, is often hit by flash floods.

As the death toll continued to rise Thursday evening, Jordan's King Abdullah II announced that he had cancelled a visit to Bahrain, which had been scheduled for Friday. Rescue workers using flashlights were searching the cliffs near the shore of the Dead Sea where bodies had been found.

In April, 10 teenagers died after heavy rain sparked flash flooding south of the Dead Sea.
