  • New 'Halloween' Has A Record Breaking Opening Weekend

Universal Pictures said Sunday that "Halloween" took in an estimated $77.5 million in ticket sales from North American theaters.

It also marked the second highest October opening ever behind "Venom's" $80.3 million launch earlier this month.

Overseas, the film kicked things off with $14.3 million across 23 markets, leading in Mexico with $4.9 million and following behing in the United Kingdom with $3.6 million, bringing its global pull to $91.80 million.

In "Halloween", Curtis plays Laurie Strode, reprising the role that made her famous in a final face-off with Michael Myers. Recognized in 2003 by Women In Film for the trail she blazed for female producers in all genres, Hill said, "I hope some day there won't be a need for Women in Film-that it will be People in Film".

"Halloween brings the franchise back to life in a fresh, relevant and fun way that is winning over fans and critics alike".

As reported by Variety, the flick had the best horror opening ever with a female lead and the highest-grossing debut for a movie with a female lead over 55. Blumhouse was smart, however, to make the 2018 version a direct sequel to the original, and it helped that it was also very good. But Halloween still crushed the box office, taking home a wildly impressive $77.5 million over three days.

It was a particularly busy week at the box office as critically acclaimed films such as the young adult adaptation "The Hate U Give" and the Robert Redford swan song "The Old Man & The Gun" expanded nationwide after a few weeks in limited release. Meanwhile "A Star Is Born" held on to the second place spot for its third weekend with $19.3 million.

"Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween" also cashed in on the spooky spirit, picking up $9.7 million to land in fourth place. The coming-of-age drama grossed $249,500 during the weekend for a $62,375 per-screen average, with the studio planning to expand next weekend after the strong opening. Box Office Mojo reports that it lagged behind last year's It, which raked in $123 million its first weekend, though it beat out The Nun, which kicked off with $53.8 million last month.

Following behind Mid90s in the indie circuit are Melissa McCarthy's Can You Ever Forgive Me? which raked in $150,000 in five locations, and Paul Dano's directorial debut Wildlife, which opened to $105,614 in four locations.

Overall box office is up 10.6 percent year-to-date, according to ComScore.

Another surprisingly strong showing puts October 54.5 percent ahead of the same frame a year ago, as well as 12 percent ahead of 2014's record month, according to comScore.
