  • Megyn Kelly’s morning show is reportedly over because of her blackface comment. More

NBC talk show host Megyn Kelly's comments about blackface on Halloween have reinvigorated a debate over costumes that cross racial lines. It was a dramatic final straw in NBC News chief Andy Lack's big-bucks experiment to bring more conservative fly-over country viewers to the morning show franchise with the addition of the outspoken ex-Fox News lightning rod who prides herself on being "not pc". So let's rewind and dissect the comments that derailed her show.

Despite the calm words, Page Six came out with some juicy details, including that Hall reportedly learned she was being replaced just before she went on air the Friday before. "Megyn remains an employee of NBC News and discussions about next steps are continuing", said Bryan Freedman. At the time, her contract at Fox was up for renewal and she said she was searching for new opportunities. In the segment, she asked, "What is racist? Only the truth will set you free!"

Kelly also stated to a panel of white people, "What is racist?"

"Megyn Kelly Today" is ending unceremoniously after its namesake host defended blackface Halloween costumes on Tuesday.

It wasn't until this gaffe, however, that NBC showed (in non-anonymous source fashion) how they truly felt about her.

The announcement, which was published on NBC News" homepage, was titled, "Megyn Kelly will not return to "Today, '" and notes that Kelly's future with the company is uncertain.

Kelly added that it was "OK" for white people to wear blackface on Halloween when she was a young girl. "Back when I was a kid, that was okay just as long as you were dressing as a character".

Those statements caused her own NBC colleagues to turn on her. "She is not ever coming back".

Kelly had signed a $69m contract that saw her take on a short-lived news show Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly where she interviewed figures such as Alex Jones and Russian president Vladimir Putin.

"To me, I thought, why would it be controversial for someone dressing up as Diana Ross to make herself look like this fantastic woman as a way of honoring and respecting her?" She's a good person, a wonderful mom, wife, sister, friend and human being.

In addition to calling out Ailes' behavior and asking a tough question of then-candidate Donald Trump during a GOP debate, Kelly covered Matt Lauer's sexual harassment scandal, and invited one of his alleged victims on her show. Kelly interviewed the "InfoWars" founder and popular conspiratorial talk radio host in an interview in which she tried to grill him on some of his more controversial claims.
