Quarterly revenue was 221 billion yen during the period, lower than market projections for 232 billion yen.

Nintendo revealed that its Nintendo Switch console has sold 22.86 million units worldwide as of September 30. The Kyoto-based company maintained its full-year forecasts. Now, according to a new report from Nintendo, the Switch's lifetime sales just surpassed those of the GameCube.

"It was a quiet quarter without many big releases from Nintendo", Hideki Yasuda, senior analyst at Ace Research Institute, said prior to the release.

The company highlighted digital "sales of downloadable versions of packaged software and add-on content for Nintendo Switch showed especially good growth", of 71.7% year-over-year.

"From the beginning we decided on a target that would be challenging to reach, not easy", Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said after the results. The Switch's sales figures don't appear to be plateauing at the moment, though admittedly the console will have to do some pretty frantic holiday sales if it wants to meet its projected yearly goal.

Still, remakes and indie titles aren't compelling enough for most people to buy a new console. If any first-party Nintendo title in the world were to boost the Switch into Wii-like numbers, I think it'd be that one. More than a third of that came from the PlayStation division, where profit climbed 65 percent from a year earlier to 91 billion yen. We must keep releasing new software. Nintendo has previously said it will release another smartphone title, Mario Kart Tours, sometime before April.

"The PlayStation is doing great, Spider-Man sold like insane in the second quarter", said Kazunori Ito, an analyst at Morningstar Investment Services in Tokyo. This makes it the youngest game on the list, and with 2.16 million sold since its release late June it's another strong showing for the company's mascot.
