Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif on Sunday met Shehbaz Sharif in Lahore's office of National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Shahbaz, 67, is the younger brother of ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is facing corruption charges in three cases.

The PML-N party lost the election on July 25 to the rival Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf led by former cricket hero Imran Khan.

By-elections to fill 11 parliamentary seats and 19 provincial assembly seats are scheduled for October 14.

Sharif was sent for a 10 day remand by the anti-corruption court in Pakistan. A source at the time said that Fawad had also provided "incriminating evidence" against the ex-chief minister in the Ashiana Housing corruption case, making it hard for him (Sharif) to defend himself before a combined investigation team of the NAB Lahore.

The bureau was also investigating Sharif in the Saaf Pani case, Paragon Housing Society scandal and Punjab Power Company corruption cases.

Earlier, hundreds of angry PML-N supporters created a ruckus in the premises of the court in Lahore and stopped the armoured vehicle of the police in which Shehbaz Sharif was brought to the court. Senior PML-N leader Ayaz Sadiq and senator Raja Zafar-ul-Haq told the media that the party had sought cooperation from other opposition parties and described Shehbaz Sharif's arrest as "unjustified".

Marriyum Aurangzeb said neither government land nor funds were used in Ashiana Housing Scheme.

Reacting to Shahbaz's arrest, the PML-N said that arresting the Leader of the Opposition without seeking the permission of the NA speaker was "against the law".

In November 2017, NAB had launched a thorough probe into the affairs of the 56 public-sector companies formed by Shahbaz administration in Punjab for their alleged involvement in corruption.

Shehbaz, also head of the main opposition Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) party, is accused of granting illegal contracts to his favorites for the construction of low-priced houses for the poor and middle-class in Punjab - the country's political power base, and a stronghold of the PML (N). Nawaz Sharif was released from prison last month pending an appeal against his conviction.
