But a run of five consecutive games for Federer maintained the world number three's spectacular run in this competition.

"I was feeling good on court apart from closing it out, I had a few errors there".

"I still can't believe I won, it's been an unbelievable week for me", Copil said. "I'm happy to win in front of my home crowd".

"I'm starting to really get to understand the conditions and it was consistent, my most consistent match by far". Second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa led Croatian No. 6 Borna Coric 7-6 (2), 1-2 when Coric retired.

"I'd love to see now what kind of results I can have - but it went his way today, this is how it ended".

Copil again showed his steel with an early break in the second set before Federer made another fightback with an overhead victor to break back in the seventh game.

The world No.3 was a break down in both sets against the Romanian qualifier who set up the match by upsetting second seed Alexander Zverev in the last four.

The 28-year-old outsider fired 26 aces, with his impenetrable service game laying the basis for a surprise win.

In the third, Copil kept pace, with Zverev faltering on serve in the 10th game and his opponent taking advantage with a cross-court volley victor to advance amid cheers for the underdog.

"I knew this would be a tough match", Copil said.

Medvedev's repeated errors made it easy for his esteemed opponent to wrap up the opening set and there was another break at the start of the second to set the tone.

Anderson was runner-up to Djokovic at Wimbledon this year but the win in Vienna represented the biggest title of his career.

"But winning is fun, winning gives you confidence and that's what I'll need if I want to do well in London and beat the best over there, so I hope that this confidence I gained from here is going to help me there".

"I tried to mix up my game, not giving him any pace".

"But I don't think of Connors' record".

The Romanian aims for a first title after arriving at Basel without a career win over a top-10 opponent.
