The ATP World Tour 500 trophy marks the biggest title run of Anderson's career.

The 28-year-old Japanese is making a late charge to the eight-player ATP Finals, in what would be his first appearance in two years when it opens in London on November 11.

With three places remaining for the season-ending showpiece, Nishikori will look to further boost his chances by beating Mikhail Kukushkin in the semi-finals after the Kazakh needed three sets to defeat Marton Fucsovics.

Anderson's tussle with the Japanese star was his fifth tour-level final of the season and second trophy of the year.

Nishikori still leads Anderson 4-3 in their head-to-head statistics, though he lost both of their matches this year.

According to the ATP World Tour's official website, Anderson - who has risen two spots to No 6 in the rankings - is the first South African since Wayne Ferreira in 1995 to reach the year-end tournament.

With a victory on Sunday, Anderson will qualify for the ATP Finals.

Now in ninth place in the race for the ATP Finals, a win would move Nishikori closer to a starting berth for the eight-man event in London next month. The Spaniard raised his level in the second set but the South African maintained an excellent 16-5 record in 3-set matches and claimed the seventh win in the last ten matches against lefty players.

Against Verdasco, Anderson hit nine of his 19 aces in the opening set.

Seeking a ninth title at his hometown event, and a 99th overall, Federer will play 93th-ranked Marius Copil on Sunday. The next break point did not come until the 10th game.

He clinched on his fourth chance when Medvedev netted from the baseline.

He beat Nishikori in February to win the New York Open.
