Raziq was killed in the attack, while two U.S. citizens and several top Afghan official, including the governor, were wounded, Pajhwok Afghan News reported.

In a tweet on Thursday, hours after escaping unhurt from the same attack that killed Raziq, General Scott Miller expressed his condolences over the death of his "great friend". But the local commander of the NDS intelligence service and the Kandahar provincial governor Zalmay Wesa were also killed.

The Americans were wounded in the cross-fire after gunfire erupted at the palace, Peters said.

Col. Peters says the attack appears to be Afghan-on-Afghan, noting the assailant was killed.

CBN News has confirmed the top USA general in Afghanistan barely escaped Thursday after an attack during a high-level security meeting at the Kandahar Palace.

The Taliban claiming responsibility for the Kandahar attack that killed the US' top Afghan ally shows that the militant group is becoming even bolder in trying to assert itself, author and professor Jeremy Kuzmarov told Sputnik Thursday.

"The police chief, Gen. Raziq, and the provincial intelligence chief, Gen. Abdul Momin, were killed".

Asked how the attack would affect voter turnout in Saturday's parliamentary elections, Mr. Mattis was cautious.

Raziq had been police chief of Kandahar since 2011 and had been accused of severe human rights abuses, including running a secret torture center.

A bodyguard for Kandahar's governor opened fire inside a building where senior officials had met to discuss the security situation in the south, Agha Lalay Datyagiri, Kandahar's deputy governor told Stars and Stripes.

"We stabilized and treated the wounded and secured the area, " said Butler, adding that Miller made sure the scene was secure and the wounded were taken away by medivac before he left the area and returned to Kabul. He narrowly escaped an attack a year ago in which five Emiratis were killed and the UAE's ambassador to Afghanistan Juma Al Kaabi was injured.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Mohammad Yusuf Ahmadi, said in an email to journalists that the group carried out the attack and that its "main target" was Miller.

Coming before nationwide parliamentary elections Saturday, the loss of the Kandahar leadership casts a further shadow on a political season already marred by bloodshed.

For the first time since a US -led invasion forced the Taliban from power in 2001, elections won't be held across Afghanistan.

"We had served together for many years".

USA forces confirmed the attack, casting it as "Afghan on Afghan" violence. Afghanistan lost a patriot, my condolences to the people of Afghanistan. "Wish to see Afghan and other security forces succeeding to bring an end to this prolonged violence in Afghanistan".
