  • India prepares to inaugurate the world's tallest statue

Modi would also inaugurate the "Wall of Unity" (a monument defining India's unity) near the statue. "It's my good fortune that I got to give the nation Sardar Patel's statute". Vasava added the tribal people would soon send letters written in their blood to Modi in a further protest against the statue.

The bronze statue, which depicts Patel wearing the traditional Indian attire of a dhoti and a shawl, took 33 months to build and involved 250 engineers and 3400 workers, according to the Press Information Bureau of India. Instead, he tore into the Modi government, saying it's "ironic that a statue of Sardar Patel is being inaugurated, but every institution he helped build is being smashed".

Modi was accompanied by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

Two super-fast elevators will be installed at the statue's core to take visitors up to the statue's chest to view a panoramic scene of the surrounding countryside, including the Sardar Sarovar Dam with its huge reservoir, and dozens of villages.

"Instead of spending money on a giant statue, the government should have used it for farmers in the district", Vijendra Tadvi, a farmer who also worked as a driver on the statue's construction site, told BBC Gujarati's Roxy Gagdekar. "No Indian will ever forget this day", the Prime Minister said in his speech.

Mr Modi, whose nationalist government has made the statue one of its flagship projects ahead of a national election next year, arrived in Gujarat's main city of Ahmedabad on Tuesday night.

The statue is more than twice the size of New York's Statue of Liberty and also dwarfs the 128-metre Spring Temple Buddha in China, the world's second-biggest statue.

Nevertheless, others see some long-term value in projects such as the statue, and feel they will attract global attention to India. "He saved India from balkanisation... today, we, the 130 crore Indians, are working shoulder to shoulder to build a new India that is strong, prosperous and inclusive".

The construction work has taken almost four years to complete the mega project. "It will be a place to visit for those nostalgic about the freedom struggle".

However, a top official from the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam said that the picture of the signboard featuring the Tamil text was fake.

What are the tallest statues in the world?

The firm shipped about 6,500 bronze panels, weighing just under 2,000 tonnes, to enclose the towering figure.

The project is facing opposition from local villagers in the region and from rival political parties. Dedicated to a famous Indian warrior, Shivaji, will reach a height of 212 metres.
