With the record-breaking group of women elected this year comes a crop of other records and firsts.

(5) Cindy Hyde-Smith won a plurality in MS and is heavily favored to win her runoff election to become the first woman ever elected to the US Senate from her state.

Ayanna Pressley, congresswoman-elect for Massachusetts' 7th district.

Record numbers of women and ethnic minorities ran for office in 2018, paving the way for a number of historic landmarks on Tuesday night. Democrats have also crowed, loudly and often, about the number of women they had on the ballot - many of whom won last night. "In 1984, I was attending the U.S. Air Force Academy and told my first flight instructor that I was going to be a fighter pilot".

Among this new class, history was made in pairs: American voters elected the two first ever Latinas to represent Texas, the first Muslim American women in Congress, and the first Native American women in Congress.

First black woman from New England in Congress: Democrats Jahana Hayes of CT and Ayanna Pressley of MA will share the precedent as the first black women elected to the US Congress from New England. Davids, a lawyer who will also be Kansas' first openly gay member of Congress, defeated incumbent Republican Kevin Yoder by nine points in a state that was handily won by Trump in 2016.

In fact, the number of Republican women in Congress, at latest count, will decline in the next session.

Democrats Rashida Tlaib of MI and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota will be the first Muslim women to serve in Congress. These six women along with dozens more congressional candidates, led to the Democrats retaking control of the House of Representatives.

These new records represent the culmination of a record-setting year for female candidates.

In Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, Ilhan Omar - a Somali immigrant - won with 78 percent of the vote in midterm elections despite her far-left radical record.

The Democrats may not have gotten quite the blue wave they were hoping for ー but for women in politics, Election Day was an indisputable success.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, congresswoman-elect for New York's 14th district. Women are also more likely to identify as Democrats or lean Democratic, according to a 2018 Pew Research Center survey.

The inclusive midterm victories bode well for future election cycles, said Kimberly Peeler-Allen, co-founder of Higher Heights for America, a national organisation focused on galvanising black women voters and electing black women as candidates. She became a progressive star after her upset primary victory over Republican Joseph Crowley, a high-ranking House Democrat.
