  • River Vs Boca Juniors Postponed After Players Attacked With Tear Gas

The second leg of the Copa Libertadores final between Buenos Aires rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors has been delayed after River fans attacked the Boca bus as it arrived at the stadium.

Met by a barrage of River Plate fans, the Boca Juniors bus was pelted with missiles and, crucially, tear gas.

The midfielder Fernando Gago blamed "the presidents of Conmebol and Federation Internationale de Football Association [who] wants us to play".

Former Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez, who was among the injured Boca players, reportedly said: "We are not in condition to play".

About an hour before kick-off and with the Monumental stadium filled to capacity, Boca officials told reporters some of their players were not fit to play in the decisive second leg.

The attack came despite the bus travelling with heavy police protection ahead of the second leg of the local derby between the two most popular teams in the country - dubbed the biggest club match in the history of Argentine football.

The incident occurred three years after a Copa Libertadores last-16 tie between the same teams was abandoned at half-time after Boca fans attacked the River players with pepper spray in the tunnel. His colleagues, even with time to recover from the effects of ingesting a toxic substance, could not possibly have been at their psychological peak for what is nearly certainly the biggest game they will ever play and the biggest game in the history of South American club football.

The match was postponed until 5:00pm Sunday local time (7:00am Monday AEDT).

Further reports suggest that the driver of the Boca Juniors bus almost collapsed upon arriving at the Monumental due to the effect of the gases, while some of the players were said to be vomiting, with Tévez, Wanchope y Espìnoza among the worst affected. A charitable view might be that the delay had a common sense explanation: It would buy time for Boca to leave the stadium and get safely away before the crowd dispersed.

In particular, team captain Pablo Perez was hit in the eye and was taken to a hospital. However, it does now seem likely that the match will be suspended and take place at a later date. Had River won, Boca would surely have appealed against the result and in the circumstances, it would have been hard for anybody to concentrate on the actual game.

The match between Boca Juniors and River Plate has been postponed until Sunday at 5pm GMT, according to reports.
