Cohen Pleads Guilty to Lying to Congress About 'Moscow Project'

According to two congressional sources familiar with the questioning of Trump Organization employees, several people tied to the Trump Organization were asked about the same Moscow project.

Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former lawyer, made a surprise appearance before a federal judge in NY on Thursday and pleaded guilty to lying to Congress to cover up that he was negotiating a real estate deal in Moscow on Trump's behalf during the heat of his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

Cohen's plea arrangement made clear that prosecutors believe that while Trump insisted repeatedly throughout the campaign that he had no business dealings in Russian Federation, his lawyer was continuing to pursue the Trump Tower Moscow project weeks after his boss had clinched the Republican nomination for president and well after the point he and his associates have publicly acknowledged.

Schiff said the guilty plea raises more concern about other Trump associates: "We believe other witnesses were also untruthful before our committee", he added.

"These developments make clear that my colleagues and I must step in and provide accountability", said Nadler (D-NY). After the 2018 midterms, President Donald Trump's decision to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions and replace him with loyalist Matthew Whitaker-who has been highly critical of Mueller's investigation-seemed highly Nixon-ish to those who are old enough to remember Watergate.

Cohen falsely told Congress that plans for a Moscow tower ended in January 2016, before "the very first primary" of the election cycle. In fact, Cohen told a federal judge, negotiations to build a Trump hotel there continued through most of the 2016 campaign, and Cohen had lied about it to Congress to protect "Individual 1", the owner of the company he worked for, which is to say, Trump.

The Cohen revelation comes as Mueller's investigation is showing fresh signs of aggressive activity. "I was running my business, a lot of different things, during the campaign". Cohen said he kept Trump, named as "Individual 1" in the plea, updated about the deal's progress, and also "briefed family members of Individual 1 within the company about the project".

At issue with Stone, a GOP political operative and Trump confidante, is what he knows about the timing and release of WikiLeaks publication of hacked emails from John Podesta and other Democrats during the 2016 presidential campaign.

He also said he falsely told Congress he never took any steps toward traveling to Russian Federation, when in fact he had discussed travelling there, although he never did.

Reacting to the plea, House Speaker Paul Ryan said Cohen "should be prosecuted to the extent of the law".

Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former attorney, has reached a plea agreement with special counsel Robert Mueller. "I said I would confirm and revert".

Robert Mueller is evidently digging into the Trump Tower deal in Moscow.

The nine-page charging document for Cohen traces the behind-the-scenes communication about the project that had been discussed more than 20 years ago.

In August, Cohen pleaded guilty to multiple counts of campaign finance violations, tax evasion and bank fraud. Cohen is to be sentenced December 12. The president has denied having affairs with the women. He previously worked in the Canberra press gallery and recently finished a Masters of Journalism at Columbia University in NY.
