Essebsi: Saudi founding King Abdulaziz contributed to Tunisia's current policies

After visiting Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, the crown prince went to Tunisia, where protesters denounced him for his alleged involvement in the killing of a Saudi journalist.

In this photo released by the Egyptian presidency's office, Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, left, meets with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo, Nov. 27, 2018.

The mood in the streets was less friendly.

They chanted "the murderer is not welcome in Tunisia" and "Shame on Tunisia's rulers" for receiving the prince.

He was killed and reportedly dismembered in what Saudi Arabia said was a "rogue" operation.

Tunisian President Essebsi's office said Tunisia denounces the journalist's killing and wants a full investigation, but doesn't want it to be used to destabilize Saudi Arabia.

Citing Argentina's robust human rights law, Human Right Watch (HRW) filed a petition on Monday asking a federal prosecutor to bring charges against the crown prince, a close ally of President Donald Trump, for "violations of global law committed during the armed conflict in Yemen" including the killings of more than 15,000 civilians and blockades which have pushed 14 million people to the brink of starvation.

She wouldn't rule out "interaction" with the crown prince during the summit that opens Friday.

His group tried to seek a court order blocking the prince's visit. It read: "No to the pollution of the Tunisian revolution".

Has Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's visit to Egypt achieved its objective?

The official welcome contrasted with hostile protests by non-governmental representatives and leftist political parties with more than 200 protesters on Tuesday to cries of "Tunisia is not for sale". Some critics have likened the Tunisian Ennahda party to the Muslim Brotherhood, which is banned in Saudi Arabia.

"But even a small risk of a messy dispute in the Argentinian courts could overshadow a trip previously seen as a chance for the prince to show he remained welcome among world leaders even after the conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies that he had authorized the killing of Khashoggi", the Herald added, noting that MBS' post-Khashoggi charm offensive has been going fairly well thus far.

Argentinian charges regarding war crimes-or even MbS's decision to back out of the G20 summit as potential charges loom-could send a strong message that the crown prince will be held accountable for his actions, even as Trump refuses to cut off support for him in the interest of the pair's business relationship.
