Hundreds of Google employees across the world have walked off the job in protest of the internet giant's lenient treatment of executives accused of sexual misconduct.
Thousands of Google workers walked out of offices across the world on Thursday in protest of how the company handles sexual harassment.
Google workers left their offices in Tokyo, Singapore, Zurich, London, Berlin and Dublin on Thursday. The move was sparked by a New York Times report that revealed that Google protected Andy Rubin, the "Father of Android", and paid him $90 million while keeping quiet on allegations.
However, Rubin denied the allegations this month and slammed New York Times on Twitter for containing "inaccuracies about my employment at Google and wild exaggerations about my compensation".
The CEO's response:Sundar Pichai has said he supports the employees' right to take action. "We are taking in all their feedback so we can turn these ideas into action", she said.
Another employee said: "It's not necessarily the senior executives that are a problem but the structures that are in place - this is a call for change".
Sam Singer, a lawyer for Rubin, disputed the allegations in the Times report.
"I'm here protesting against harassment in the workplace to make sure that we don't protect or support those perpetrators of harassment", one Google employee told Sky News.
Now, Google workers from the company's Mountain View HQ have begun walking out of the building in what appears to be the largest walkouts seen so far.
"I think that sexual harassment and sexual misconduct is kind of the tip of the iceberg of the things that women deal with in a work environment where they are a minority", said Amelia Brunner, a software engineer who's been with Google for three years. "None of these people received an exit package".
Furthermore the protesters demand that an employee representative gets a seat on the company's board of directors.
Demandsposted in the account included improved processes for reporting sexual misconduct and resolving cases of harassment, as well as a commitment by Google to pay and opportunity equality. Google did not dispute the report, according to Reuters. It also alleged that Google protected two other unnamed executives accused of sexual misconduct, removing one with a severance package while retaining another. He said those who participated in the walkout would not be penalized and noted that many senior leaders took part.
