Nancy Pelosi, a mainstay of American politics for almost two decades, on Wednesday was nominated by her fellow Democrats to again be the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives as she manoeuvred to squelch a small group demanding younger leadership.

The House of Representatives' Democratic caucus is choosing its candidates for leadership today, and despite an early challenge from centrists it looks like Rep. Nancy Pelosi has the nomination for House Speaker all lined up.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Nancy Pelosi won the House Democratic Caucus vote to secure her nomination as speaker. And another group, the Problem Solvers Caucus, adds eight more Democrats who say they won't vote for Pelosi for speaker unless she agrees to procedural changes for bringing forward bills and legislation.

"Pelosi has released some members to vote no in caucus and then vote present on the House floor", one lawmaker told the Hill ahead of the vote. Are there dissenters? Yes. But she will need 218 votes in the binding speaker vote on the House floor January 3., meaning she can afford to lose 16 votes if every Republican votes against her, as expected.

Nancy Pelosi is consolidating support as she mounts her unopposed campaign to be the next speaker of the House.

Together, that's more than enough votes to stop Pelosi in January.

But without a challenger and with several weeks to dole out - or withhold - favors, Pelosi is not too far from returning to the speaker's office.

Pelosi was the first woman to be speaker - back when Democrats had the House majority from 2007 to 2011.

"We met with Leader Pelosi and tried to engage her in a reasonable conversation about leadership transition".

The House speaker sets the chamber's legislative agenda and is second, behind the vice president, in the line of succession to the president.

In addition to her courting of Higgins last week, Pelosi also struck a bargain with Rep. Marcia L. Fudge, D-Ohio, who had weighed a run against her but dropped the idea and endorsed her after she was promised she would be the chairwoman of an election protection subcommittee. Joe Cunningham of SC and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia are among those who said they'd vote against Pelosi on the House floor.

Lawmakers are elevating the 48-year-old member of the Congressional Black Caucus as a new generation of leaders pushes to the forefront. "And she has shown her willingness to be out front on Democratic priorities, like addressing the opioid epidemic and gun safety, where it is clear the American people are demanding action", said Tsongas, who is retiring at the end of the year.

In other House leadership races, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of NY defeated progressive icon Rep. Barbara Lee of California by a vote of 123-113, to become the next chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

'She's making a lot of headway, ' said Rep. Joyce Beatty of OH, an ally.

But on Monday, Moulton, who declined a request for an interview through a spokesman, would not concede defeat. "Unfortunately, our concerns were dismissed outright", Rice said.

Ms Pelosi has cut deals with some of her opponents - promising leadership roles in committees and help with individual projects and goals.
