Khashoggi's body was 'dissolved' after murder: Erdogan advisor

  • Mohammed bin Salman 'told White House' Khashoggi was a dangerous Islamist

The Crown Prince urged the advisors to preserve the US-Saudi alliance and claimed the journalist was a member of the Sunni Islamist organisation the Muslim Brotherhood, according to the Washington Post.

The two sides discussed a wide range of topics including Israel, Palestine and Saudi Arabia's relations with the US.

A Saudi national and well-known critic of Saudi rulers, Khashoggi was killed and his body dismembered on 2 October.

Mr Khashoggi's family vehemently denied that he was in any way unsafe or a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

There have also been reports -- citing an unnamed Saudi official -- that the team handed the body over to a local Turkish collaborator, who then disposed of it.

That version has aroused considerable skepticism among Saudi watchers, considering bin Salman's vast control over what happens in the kingdom.

The United States will hold responsible not only those who carried out the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi but also those who led to it or were connected to it, State Department Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino told reporters on Thursday.

"Jamal Khashoggi was not a risky person in any way possible".

Germany and Switzerland have vowed to halt arms sales to Saudi Arabia until the case is clarified.

The kingdom has faced intensifying worldwide pressure to be transparent about the death of Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post who was a critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

"We made a commitment of holding accountable all those responsible for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi", the U.S. chief diplomat noted in a separate WIBK radio interview. "To claim otherwise would be ridiculous", the statement said.

On Wednesday Turkey said he was strangled immediately after entering the consulate and his body dismembered "in accordance with plans made in advance".

In June 2017, Saudi Arabia alongside the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt imposed a land, sea and air blockade on Qatar, which they accuse of supporting terrorism, including the Muslim Brotherhood group.

"This is what is understood from the prosecutor's statement", said Aktay, who was close to the journalist.

On Wednesday, France's Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Khashoggi's death was a "crime" and "odious".

Saudi Arabia admitted last week that Khashoggi was murdered in a premeditated act, but has denied involvement of the Saudi royal family.

Earlier, the United States called for a swift cessation of hostilities in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition has been fighting local Houthi rebels.

"The Trump administration has taken a position that is devoid of moral foundation", she wrote, adding that "there will be no cover-up".
