Lampard proud but aggrieved after Chelsea return

  • Chelsea icon Frank Lampard claims Eden Hazard is better than Lionel Messi

Ruben Loftus-Cheek starts, albeit in a more forward role on the wing, with Willian on the other side and Alvaro Morata upfront for Chelsea as they take on Derby County in the Carabao Cup. He was as good as his word in that sense but he certainly lived every moment; a nervous ball of energy on the sideline, wincing at Tomori's own goal, suppressing a fist pump as Marriott saved his blushes shortly after and wincing once again as captain Richard Keogh shunted a replica of Tomori's error past Scott Carson.

With Eden Hazard missing the last three games, before the League Cup clash with Derby, with a back injury, the two homegrown talents have stepped up.

Lampard must have sensed an opportunity missed as Derby conceded three times in the first half and could only reply twice, exiting as Chelsea advanced to the quarter-finals.

"It happens. If he hadn't touched that ball, [Alvaro] Morata would have scored a goal". I thought they played really well today.

"It will be easy to do that because I respect the club".

It was Lampard's first return to Stamford Bridge as an opposing manager in an emotional night for the former England midfielder.

Speaking about the announcement, Zola told the assembled press: "I can tell you it's not that (Lampard)".

Hazard has made a brilliant start to the Premier League season following a return of seven goals in nine games in the English top flight.

Tom Huddlestone (Derby) Huddlestone plied his trade in the Premier League for many years, and on the basis of this performance the 31-year-old could still prove valuable for one of the smaller clubs in the division. Derby assistant Jody Morris, victor of seven trophies in two seasons in charge of the Blues' under-18 and under-19 sides before leaving to team up with Lampard, also got his moment of appreciation at the final whistle.

Chelsea - who made eight changes for the game but still fielded 11 internationals - were ahead again before the break, but it wasn't without controversy.

DF Gary Cahill, 5 - His relative lack of comfort in possession and mobility are the main reasons why he has spent so much time on the bench this season, and Derby targeted the limitations in his game with their fast attack.

And with Lampard's record of taking Chelsea youngsters on loan - Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori for example - Hudson-Odoi will be looking to impress.

21' - OWN-GOAL! Chelsea 2-1 Derby: Dear, oh dear! "So we didn't have control of the game".

Perhaps that was everything, but it was hard not to link Chelsea's fluctuating concentration levels with the fact that the focus of Stamford Bridge so often drifted to the visiting dugout.

Had Lampard's own charges not been undermined by a self-destructive habit of scoring own goals - there were two here to add to one from Saturday - then they might even have prevailed, so busy was their football.
