  • Threat of rain prompts schedule changes for Christmas parades

At an event for opioid awareness at Liberty University, host Eric Bolling asked Trump about the controversy surrounding her White House Christmas decorations.

Donald Trump took to Twitter to write: 'On behalf of FLOTUS Melania and the whole Trump family, I want to wish all of you a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The first lady offered a gracious response, replying, "We are in [the] 21st century and everybody has a different taste".

But it was the 40 drooping bright red topiary trees lining the east colonnade that divided opinion.

Mrs. Trump said the decorations chosen for "the people's house" "look fantastic" and "even more beautiful" in person. In real life, they look even more handsome. I hope everybody will come over and visit it.

Fitting this year's decor theme "American Treasures", the one-minute video shows Trump clad in all-black strolling through an ominous sea of pointed, blood-red cone-shaped trees, touching various ornaments displaying miniature US landmarks, and looking at blue-and-gold trees.

It's not the first time Stephen King's horror hotel movie has been mentioned in connection with the first lady's holiday tastes.

As the crowd erupted in applause, Trump added: "In real life, they look even more lovely".

The First Lady hasn't always been able to rise above the fray.

"Talking about opioids and getting the message out, and what is the media... hung up on with the first lady now?"

There was a caveat, however: "And also sometimes you need to fight back, I'm sorry".

Trump's appearance at Liberty University was to share her "Be Best" initiative while encouraging the students to make a difference in the world in fighting against the opioid crisis by raising awareness and removing the stigma.
