Mueller says Manafort violated plea agreement by lying to investigators

Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort has violated his plea agreement by lying to the FBI and special counsel investigators after pleading guilty to federal charges, according to a court filing.
That means Manafort, who was previously accused of tampering with a witness, may not get any breaks on his sentence he might have received for cooperating with Mueller's probe, the special counsel said.
Special counsel Robert Mueller claimed that Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign manager, lied to prosecutors after striking a plea deal, and requested that he be sentenced for his crimes.
He pleaded guilty in October 2017 and pledged to cooperate with the Mueller probe, and was later sentenced after expressing his remorse that he "lied in an investigation that was important to national security".
"After signing the plea agreement, Manafort committed federal crimes by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Counsel's Office on a variety of subject matters, which constitute breaches of the agreement", Mueller's office said.
Manafort, 69, was thought to be a star witness in the probe into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation, given his knowledge of President Donald Trump's presidential campaign.
Under an agreement with prosecutors, Manafort faces a maximum prison sentence of about 10 years, not counting a sentence for his August conviction in Virginia for bank and tax fraud.
Through his attorneys, Manafort denied lying, saying he "believes he provided truthful information" during a series of sessions with Mueller's investigators.
Mueller's joint status report noted that both sides called for a sentencing date to be set without delay. The president's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, entered into a plea deal with Mueller, while Trump's longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, has been providing information to Mueller's team and federal prosecutors in NY, among others, a person familiar with the matter has said.
Trump has repeatedly denied collusion of any kind. He remains jailed while awaiting his sentence.
He attended a meeting at Trump Tower in June 2016 with a group of Russians offering damaging information on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, who lost in an upset to Trump in the presidential vote that November. Except for one aspect of their bank fraud case, in which Manafort appeared to dangle access to the Trump campaign in exchange for a bank loan, the cases did not publicly describe Manafort's work as campaign chairman.
