  • Пожары в Калифорнии возникла новая опасность

Seventeen days after the fire started, firefighters successfully formed a perimeter around the destructive blaze, Cal Fire officials said. At least 84 people have been killed.

The blaze that ignited November 8 destroyed more than 13,000 homes. The Butte County Sheriff-Coroner's website as of Monday listed almost 300 individuals still unaccounted for.

Only on Sunday did authorities announce that the fire was 100 percent contained, thanks to some heavy rain during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, although they stressed that it would be months before firefighters would be able to completely extinguish it.

The office also said the death toll rose to 85 on Saturday after three more bodies were found on the day.

The U.S. government has distributed more than $20 million in assistance for people displaced by the catastrophic wildfire in Northern California, a Federal Emergency Management Agency official said Monday as hundreds of searchers kept looking for more human remains.

The precipitation temporarily stopped some search crews Friday who were scouring burned-down areas for remains. "And at first blush, the answer is: probably leaving California, if they can go anywhere".

Despite fears of mudslides and debris flow, neither occurred in the burn areas where rain fell. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said it was still too early to say when the search would be complete but said the region was being covered as quickly as possible, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The city of Paradise was a popular destination for retirees, with people ages 65 or older accounting for a quarter of its 27,000 residents.

Captain David Dahl, a fireman from the Palo Alto Fire Department, who was invited to the event with his two other colleagues, shared with the audience the stories of how they combated the wildfire in the past 14 days in northern California.

In southern California, more residents were allowed to return to areas that were evacuated because of the 151-square-mile Woolsey fire as crews worked to fix power, telephone and gas utilities.

About 1,100 residents were still under evacuation orders in Malibu and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County, down from 250,000 at the height of the fire.

Hydro One says it will send technicians to help with recovery efforts in California following a devastating wildfire that killed dozens of people and destroyed thousands of homes.
