  • Navjot Singh Sidhu addresses the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kartarpur Corridor in Kartarpur Pakistan

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Kartarpur corridor, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said it was impossible for India and Pakistan to go to war because both have nuclear weapons.

Imran Khan said that there have been "mistakes on both sides" and asserted that the two sides should not live in the past. He said if India takes one step forward, Pakistan will take two steps. Why can't we solve this problem? Imran Khan was bemused about the criticism of the Congress leader before adding that Navjot Singh Sidhu was talking about peace and brotherhood. "I am very happy that while for the last 20 years, the government of India has been asking for this Kartarpur corridor, for the first time, Pakistan responded positively". We want to move forward and want a civilised relationship with India, he said. The former cricket star reiterated his July election victory pledge that "if India takes one step forward, then we will take two steps forward toward friendship".

The road link, dubbed the "corridor of peace" in local media, is the latest attempt to improve cultural ties between the two countries who have harbored resentment for decades, after the bloody riots which followed the creation of the modern states of India and Pakistan following the departure of the British colonial government in 1947.

"People are happy about it (opening of corridor) and the (Indian) government can not overlook it", she said while talking to ARY News programme "Off The Record". "This is also reflective of the importance and primacy that Pakistan gives to all minorities", said the statement released by the Pakistan Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Following the groundbreaking ceremony of Kartarpur corridor, in Pakistan, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran who laid the foundation stone on Wednesday said that the only issue between India and Pakistan is Kashmir; and it all needs is just two capable leadership to resolve this issue.

During his spech, Khan echoed Sidhu when he said that both countries needed to come together and resolve their issues. "After all what's the impediment in holding talks, nobody is doing it on gunpoint", she said. The premier said he hoped we don't have to wait till Sidhu is chief minister to have better relations with India. The temple in Kartarpur in Pakistan is among the holiest sites for Sikhs. But a terrorist attack on an Indian military installation in September 2016 that Delhi blamed on what it said were Pakistan-linked terrorists overshadowed these efforts.

Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal are representing India at the ceremony.

Further, he told that the construction of the corridor will stand completed before the next birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak in November.

Sikh pilgrims coming from other countries can land at Lahore and Sialkot global airports and reach to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib from the old route.
