  • In setback, Pompeo's North Korea meetings called off without explanation

The meeting between Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol, the former spy chief and now top nuclear negotiator, "will now take place at a later date. when our respective schedules permit", the US side said just after midnight on Wednesday, hours before Pompeo was supposed to travel to NY.

The State Department said the talks would be rescheduled "when our respective schedules permit". But the Blue House would not reveal the reason for the postponement and referred questions to the State Department.

"The Secretary and Vice Chairman Kim will discuss making progress on all four pillars of the Singapore Summit joint statement, including achieving the final, fully verified denuclearization of the DPRK", it added.

North Korea's foreign minister told the United Nations in September that continued sanctions were deepening its mistrust of the United States and there was no way the country would give up its nuclear weapons unilaterally under such circumstances.

"We're working on finding dates and times and places that will work for each of the two leaders", Pompeo said at the time.

"What remains to be done is the USA corresponding reply", it added.

"It's a lot easier when the North Koreans are misbehaving, that tends to promote solidarity between Washington and Seoul", Russel said.

"This announcement of the postponement at the last minute is not a good sign because it indicates that the negotiations are not progressing well enough to allow the holding of the meeting", he said.

The UN Security Council is expected to meet behind closed doors at Russia's request on Thursday to discuss sanctions imposed on North Korea, diplomats said.

The diplomacy comes a year after fears mounted of war, with Trump threatening "fire and fury" after Pyongyang's nuclear and missile tests.

USA officials have said Vietnam's socialist market economy could be an example for North Korea.

"But I will say this, I will say this very simply - We are in no rush, the sanctions are on", he said.

In Singapore, during their first head-to-head history, in June, the strong man of Pyongyang had pledged to the president of the United States to work for a "denuclearization of the complete peninsula". A senior official at the Foreign Ministry in Seoul cautioned against reading too much into the decision to postpone the meeting.

JS Tours has also offered a new five-night, six-day tour package bound for Mount Paekdu, saying Moon and Kim had a commemorative photo together at the Chonji crater lake on top of the North Korean mountain, according to RFA. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has also accused Russian Federation of cheating on U.N. sanctions on North Korea.

Trump and Pompeo have consistently said that sanctions will not be removed until North Korea gives up its nuclear weapons and allows the global community to verify it has done so.
