  • Journalist's fiancee demands justice after'death squad killing

Istanbul's chief prosecutor announced Wednesday that The Washington Post columnist was strangled immediately after he entered the consulate on October 2 to collect a document he needed to marry his Turkish fiancee.

It is also pressing Saudi Arabia for information concerning Khashoggi's remains, which still haven't been found, as well as who ordered the journalist's slaying.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that the Saudis are protecting the person responsible for Jamal Khashoggi's murder, adding that Turkey would not abandon its investigation.

Riyadh insists Khashoggi's body was handed to a "local collaborator" to dispose of.

The Saudi chief prosecutor, Saud al-Mujeb, left for the airport and was scheduled to return to Saudi Arabia.

"It's an very bad thing that took place", Pompeo told conservative talk show host Brian Kilmeade.

"We also noted that Saudi Arabia must extradite all 18 suspects to Turkey so that they can be held accountable for what they did", a senior Turkish official told CNN on Wednesday.

But despite the fact that Saudi Arabia has admitted that the killing of the Saudi journalist was premeditated, it has not explained how.

Turkish officials had previously revealed details about the October 2 death of Khashoggi, including the strangling and dismemberment but always anonymously and usually through leaks to the Turkish media.

The case has brought near unprecedented worldwide scrutiny of Saudi Arabia and its powerful crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, whom Khashoggi had criticised.

According to local media, the chief Turkish prosecutor has called on his Saudi counterpart to identify the mastermind behind the murder of Khashoggi.

He went into self-imposed exile in the United States a year ago.

Turkish authorities have repeatedly accused Riyadh of causing hindrance in the ongoing investigations into the case by denying key pieces of evidence, including the whereabouts of the body. It recently acknowledged that Turkish evidence shows the killing was premeditated.

He also met Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdelaziz.

Since the Washington Post columnist vanished earlier this month, Turkish officials have strategically leaked key developments in the case to control the narrative.

Associated Press writer Mehmet Guzel reported this story in Istanbul and AP writer Suzan Fraser reported from Ankara, Turkey.
