  • Gunman dead after killing 12 in bar filled with college students

The veteran officer, who had served on the force for 29 years and was due to retire in 2019, told her he needed to rush to the scene at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California.

That message, along with others previously posted by Long, were removed by the various social media platforms following the shooting.

The former Marine machine-gunner opened fire on the pair with his.45-caliber Glock 21, striking Helus several times.

Officials are still unclear on a motive, but it appears Long may have been carrying out revenge killings on his high school tormentors. Instagram and Facebook refuse to discuss individual accounts and did not respond to a request for comment.

"Thousand Oaks is one of the safest communities in the United States", Capt. Garo Kuredjian of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department told the Los Angeles Times.

When police entered the country music bar, they found the gunman dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean.

"Ron was a hardworking, dedicated sheriff's sergeant who was totally committed and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero because he went in to save lives".

Once he helped get people down the street to safety, Wennerstrom said he and others went back to help anyone remaining.

"There are hundreds of thousands of people with PTSD", said Dominique Colell, a track coach at Newbury Park High School, which Long attended. In another, he grabbed her rear and midsection after she refused to return a cellphone he said was his.

The incident happened in April, when yelling and loud banging noises coming from the home Long shared with his mother prompted a next-door neighbour to call authorities.

"I turned on the news and I was watching it and when they said his name my jaw just dropped", Colell said.

"Ian came up and started screaming at me that was his phone", Colell said.

Colell said Long was "the only student that I was actually scared of when I coached there". "The fire is literally so close to exploding into an area that is massively populated".

Authorities at the time anxious that the 28-year-old Afghanistan war veteran might have post-traumatic stress disorder but a mental health specialist concluded there were no grounds to have him involuntarily committed.

Deputies responded and a mental health specialist who assessed Long anxious he might be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder but found no grounds to hospitalize him.

"My son was in Las Vegas with a lot of his friends and he came home", she said.

"And I don't want prayers, I don't want thoughts, I want gun control", Schmidt-Orfanos said, her voice breaking. He declined to engage on questions on whether the nation needs stricter gun control laws.

Later never came for the couple, as Helus was shot several times and killed in a gun battle with troubled former US Marine Ian David Long inside the bar, which was hosting its popular, weekly "College Country Night".
