  • US urges Pakistan to sanction terrorists behind Mumbai attacks

Solemn memorial services were held in the city for the victims as India marked the 10th anniversary of the attacks, in which the heavily armed gunmen stormed multiple targets.Mumbai's police paid homage to more than a dozen officers and commandos killed in the operation against the militants. Two luxury hotels held private services while a Jewish Center, which was also attacked, unveiled a new memorial to all those who died in the assault.

At least a 174 people were killed and more than 300 injured in the attacks.

Earlier on Monday, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, in a statement released by the US Department of State, announced that the US will reward up to Dollars five million for information leading to the arrest or conviction of any individual involved in planning or facilitating the 2008 attack.

Noting that a day earlier, the State Department had announced to offer up to USD5 million for information leading to the arrest and conviction to anyone who committed or assisted the horrific attacks, Sales said, "With this, we remind the world that we have not forgotten those who perished 10 years ago and we will not rest until the perpetrators are brought to justice".

Commemorating the tenth anniversary of the Mumbai atrocities, Pompeo said it was "an affront to the families of the victims that, after ten years, those who planned the Mumbai attack have still not been convicted for their involvement".

Pompeo further asserted that the United States will call upon Pakistan, to uphold its UN Security Council obligation to implement sanctions against the terrorists responsible for this atrocity.

Hafiz Saeed was put under house arrest after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, but was freed by a court in Pakistan in 2009.

"We welcome statement issued today by the United States calling on Pakistan to uphold their UN Security Council obligations to implement sanctions against terrorists responsible for 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, including Lashkar-e-Taiba and its affiliates".

The attackers belonged to Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

Paying tribute to those who were killed during the dastardly attack, Mumbai Police tweeted a video thanking those who stood by and defended the city.

Meanwhile, France, Israel and the United Kingdom took a similar stand, condemning the Mumbai terror attack. Pakistan, however, continues to act at snail's pace. Israel stands in solidarity with India against terrorism and in memory of its victims.
