The FBI is looking into claims that women have been asked to make false accusations of sexual harassment against Special Counsel Robert Mueller in exchange for money - but all may not be as it seems. The special counsel's office did not go into detail about the allegations or who is behind them.

Within minutes of Carr's statement, Burkman posted a video on Facebook revealing he plans to host a news conference in Arlington, Va., on Thursday focused on "the first of the sex assault victims of Robert Mueller".

Then on Tuesday, a conservative website posted what it said was an "intelligence report" that included the account of another woman who, in its construction, had a sexual misconduct claim against Mueller.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is probing an alleged scheme to pay women to accuse Russian Federation collusion probe chief Robert Mueller of sexual harassment in a bid to discredit him, his office said Tuesday. She reportedly contacted several reporters over the past few weeks, representing that she had worked with Mueller at a law firm in the 1970s.

Ms Taub said she found the email, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, to be "creepy" and forwarded it to Mr Mueller's office.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for the special counsel's office, confirmed that the matter has been referred to the bureau. Taub told Seven Days on Wednesday that she has never met or spoken to Mueller, who's investigating President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign.

Burkman has been critical of the Mueller probe and sought to raise funds for Rick Gates and Michael Flynn, two former Trump aides who pleaded guilty to charges brought against them by Mueller's team.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

But she's not the only woman who's come forward: Jennifer Taub, a professor at Vermont Law School, received an email from a man using a Surefire Intelligence email address around the same time, on October 22.

On Tuesday, Kimmel tore into Jacob Wohl for his alleged involvement in an elaborate plot to smear the name of Robert Mueller, former Federal Bureau of Investigation director - a spectacular case of fraud that the Federal Bureau of Investigation have now been asked to investigate. He also refused to say whether Wohl or the bogus private intel firm Wohl apparently set up was working with him - claiming that he "can't comment on staff or subcontractors". A Surefire telephone number redirects to Wohl's mother's voicemail, NBC News reported. On Twitter, Wohl denied any attempt to discredit Mueller and said a smear campaign had been launched against him.

"Mueller is a bad guy, not just because of what he does in the courtroom, but because of what he does outside of the courtroom", Burkman said.

Wohl told the Daily Beast that GOP lawyer and lobbyist Jack Burkman told him he had hired Surefire to help investigate Mueller's past, but he didn't know anything about a plot to manufacture allegations.

As for Surefire Intelligence, it also appeared to be highly dubious.
