‘We Will Close the Border Permanently if Need Be’

Stephanie Leutert, director of the Mexico Security Initiative at the University of Texas at Austin, described the Remain in Mexico plan as a strategy to take away the ability of migrants to live and work in the US while cases are processed.

They then went to rush the border, at which point the Border Patrol deployed tear gas to protect agents.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said it is critical for leaders on both sides of the border to work together to "safely resolve the migrant crisis".

"Closing a border crossing like (San Ysidro) more than temporarily involves losses of many millions of dollars and severe disruption of commerce and life at the border", he added.

Mexico inaugurates a new president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, next Saturday, and top Cabinet officials in his incoming government had planned to meet on Sunday to discuss possible solutions for dealing with the population, including potentially allowing migrants applying for asylum in the United States to stay in Mexico while they are being processed. It is said to be the busiest port of entry in the Western Hemisphere, CNN reported.

Junior, a migrant from Honduras, waves the American flag while standing with other migrants at the US-Mexico border fence.

Some saw an opportunity to breach the crossing. The move prompted federal officials to launch tear gas at the group, the San Diego Tribune reported. Mexico's Milenio TV showed images of migrants climbing over fences and peeling back metal sheeting to enter. They appeared to easily pass through without using violence, and some of the migrants called on each other to remain peaceful.

"Children screamed and coughed".

"We ran, but when you run the gas asphyxiates you more", she told the AP while cradling her 3-year-old daughter Valery in her arms.

Yards away on the US side, shoppers streamed in and out of an outlet mall.

He has deployed some 9,000 US troops along the border in support of the US Customs and Border Protection agents.

Traffic also was jammed for parts of the southbound stretch of Interstate 15 into Southern California from Las Vegas, including in the Cajon Pass.

Some attempted to enter through San Ysidro, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement.

Honduran Ana Zuniga, 23, said she saw other migrants open a small hole in concertina wire at a gap on the Mexican side of a levee, at which point USA agents fired tear gas at them.

CBP added that some demonstrators "attempted to illegally enter the US through both the northbound and southbound vehicle lanes at the port of entry itself".

Irineo Mujica, who has accompanied the migrants for weeks as part of the aid group Pueblo Sin Fronteras, said the aim of Sunday's march toward the US border was to make the migrants' plight more visible to the governments of Mexico and the U.S.

"People had thought that they were going to open the gates, but that was a lie", Caballero said.

On Sunday, hundreds of migrants made their way through Tijuana towards the border.

On Monday morning President Trump tweeted that numerous migrants are "stone cold criminals", and threatened to close the border permanently. USA border officials have said they have a limited capacity to process asylum seekers, up to 100 per day.

For the past few days, the migrants planned Sunday's protest to express their frustration about the wait and the conditions where they're living, some of them painting signs asking Trump to let them in. During his presidential campaign, he promised he'd have Mexico pay for the wall.

The Mexican Interior Ministry said Sunday that since October 19, it had sent almost 2,000 Central Americans who were part of recent caravans back to their countries. It said that 1,906 of them were members of the recent caravans.
