White House suspends CNN's Jim Acosta

  • Trump attacks members of his own party and shouts at CNN’s Jim Acosta in wild press conference

Acosta asked Trump if he thought he had "demonized" migrants by calling the group an "invasion".

Talk then turned to the aide herself, with Behar saying she shouldn't have touched Acosta. "That's enough. Put down the mic", Trump said.

White House staffers decide whether journalists are eligible, though the Secret Service determines whether their applications are approved. "I do think they're trying to shut us down to some extent".

"Revoking access to the White House complex is a reaction out of line to the purported offence and is unacceptable". He called reporters rude, hostile, unfair. "So that White House intern should be arrested for battery".

The removal of Acosta's pass is a sharp escalation of tensions between the Trump administration and the media.

DONALD Trump has banned a CNN reporter from the White House after a press conference clash, and accused him of "placing his hands" on a female intern. During the intern's final attempt, as she tried to pull the microphone away, Acosta's hand appeared to briefly brush her arm. A White House staffer attempted to grab the mic from the reporter, but he easily fended her off.

Acosta responded that Sanders' description of events was "a lie".

Other Twitter users showed Sanders' video side-by-side with the original broadcast to argue the one she posted had been doctored.

As many, including those who work in video editing noted, the clip is doctored and appears to be the one released by an editor who works for Alex Jones' fake news and conspiracy theories website InfoWars.

In a later tweet, Sanders said the White House stood by its decision. "This unprecedented decision is a threat to our democracy and the country deserves better", CNN added. "Jim Acosta is always the story".

Trump and Acosta have long have a contentious relationship as the CNN reporter often asks the president questions that seemed created to illicit a reaction from him.

"We urge the White House to immediately reverse this weak and misguided action", the association added.

In a later tweet, Mr Acosta said Ms Sanders' assertion he placed his hands on the woman was "a lie". Sharing a video that was manipulated is an assault on the truth. "It's deceptive, risky and unethical". "I've never seen a president do anything like that".

At the news conference, which lasted 1 hour and 26 minutes, Trump snapped at the press corps, called reporters "rude" for asking questions, and made baseless claims about political polling.

The president complained that the media did not cover the humming economy and was responsible for much of the country's divided politics.

In 2015 and 2016, Trump's campaign refused to give press credentials to reporters from several major news outlets, including the Washington Post and BuzzFeed.

Officials later confirmed that his credentials had been revoked. At the White House, "it's a different thing", he said.

Trump, sarcastically, replied, "Thank you for telling me that, I appreciate it".
