Dole, like former President George H.W. Bush, served in World War II.

The White House said Saturday that President Donald Trump would declare Wednesday a national day of mourning for the country's 41st president.

With Trump due to attend the funeral of President Bush, the nation can expect the Bush family to show "kindness and class" to Trump when he attends the service, according to a former Bush 43 White House official. Her Majesty had a special bond with the former president as she was the first British monarch to visit his home state of Texas in 1991.

Trump tweeted earlier Tuesday that he was "Looking forward to being with the wonderful Bush family at Blair House today".

"President Bush was a great friend and ally of the United Kingdom". Addressing the Bush family and other guests in the Rotunda, he compared himself to the late president, saying they both served outsider presidents who came to Washington to cut taxes, rebuild the military and "shake things up".

Dole's wife, Elizabeth, ran against the 41st President's son, George W. Bush in the 2000 presidential election, eventually dropping out of the race and giving her endorsement to Bush.

Another person told the Post that Bush "wouldn't want anyone there to feel uncomfortable, including the incumbent president'".

The queen and Philip weren't the only ones who visited with and had a close relationship with George H.W. Bush.

Randy Bates, a 48-year-old Idaho resident, chose to pay his respects because he was in town for work. Flags on public buildings are flying at half-staff for 30 days out of respect for Bush. He would go on to serve as ambassador to the United Nations and China, head of the Central Intelligence Agency and chairman of the Republican National Committee before being elected to two terms as Ronald Reagan's vice president.

He graduated from Yale in 1948 with a degree in economics.
