Apple Warns of Serious Consequences if iPhones Get Banned

  • Apple has a simple solution for the potential iPhone sales ban in China

As Reuters reports, Apple intends to release a software update in China early next week that will address "the minor functionality of the two patents at issue in the case".

"Based on the iPhone models we offer today in China, we believe we are in compliance", Apple said in a statement.

Apple has pledged to update its smartphone software in China to avoid a court-imposed sales ban following a legal spat with Qualcomm over alleged patent infringements.

According to Financial Times, it looks like Qualcomm has now asked Chinese courts to ban Apple from selling even the newer 2018 iPhone models i.e.

"All iPhone models remain available for our customers in China".

The Fuzhou Intermediate People's Court in China sided with Qualcomm's argument that Apple's iDevices infringe its patents related to resizing images and using touch-based navigation apps.

The ruling from a local court - which came as Washington and Beijing embark on sensitive trade negotiations - pivots the battle over patent fees to the world's largest mobile arena. Apple's response underscores the importance of the Chinese market, as well as Qualcomm's crucial role as a technology provider to the likes of Huawei Technologies Co. and Xiaomi Corp.

Earlier this week, a Chinese court banned the sales of a number of iPhone models for violating two of chip maker Qualcomm's patents.

The case against Apple is basically a part of a global patent dispute between the two tech giants which comprises of several lawsuits.

This move comes after Qualcomm successfully secured an injunction against Apple's sales of various older iPhones in China on Monday.

Since the ban went into effect, Apple has argued that it does not apply to any of the iPhones it now sells due to the fact they run iOS 12, not iOS 11. Apple notes that the ban will cost it millions of dollars a day and negatively affect Chinese consumers as well as the government as the latter could lose hundreds of thousands of tax.

However, it appears a software update won't appease Qualcomm.
