  • UAE reopens Syria embassy a boost for Assad

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to reopen its embassy in Syria after a seven-year hiatus, the UAE Foreign Ministry announced Thursday.

In private statements to Al Arabiya, Gargash stressed that everyone is convinced that there is a political path to resolve the Syrian crisis.

Bahrain resumed operations at its embassy in Syria, which has been shut since 2011.

Syria was suspended from the Arab League back in 2011 during the time of the conflict, but nearly seven years later UAE raised its flag in Damascus again during a ceremony on Thursday. The UAE embassy in Syrian capital Damascus was reopened Thursday afternoon and the UAE flag was raised over it, for the first time in seven years. It is the seventh largest producer of oil and gas in the world and has been a member of the Arab League since its independence in 1971.

The border crossing between Syria and Jordan was reopened in October.

Bahrain closed its Damascus embassy in 2011 after the eruption of the Syrian uprising and subsequent crackdown on protesters by Syria's Assad regime.

He added that Syria will strongly be back to the Arab world.

- On December 22, Syrian intelligence chief Ali Mamluk, a key regime figure, visits Cairo for talks with Egyptian officials.

With the reconciliation and resumption of diplomatic relations between the Arab countries and Syria, Zou said that it is also possible for Syria to return to the Arab League.

The UAE and Bahrain are two of six Gulf Cooperation Council nations that took a tough stance on Damascus in 2012 and eventually recognised an opposition umbrella group as the representative of Syria.

According to news reports, the UAE said the move focused to stabilize ties and also to curb the risks of a regional interference in "Arab, Syrian affairs" - a reference to non-Arab Iran.

Tehran has been a staunch supporter of Assad's government and has expanded its military footprint in Syria throughout the course of the conflict.

US President Donald Trump claimed on Monday that Saudi Arabia, Iran's regional arch foe, had agreed to finance Syria's huge reconstruction needs.

In another potential boost to Assad, Trump also last week chose to withdraw US forces that are deployed in areas of northern and eastern Syria in support of Kurdish-led militia. That is when the State Department announced that Saudi Arabia had committed $100 million to a fund to stabilize areas of Syria liberated from ISIS terrorists by a USA -led coalition.
