The attack on Saturday appeared to originate outside the United States, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"We believe the intention of the attack was to disable infrastructure, more specifically servers, as opposed to looking to steal information", a source told the LA Times.

The U-T's Editor in Chief Jeff Light said in a statement online the virus affected the production of the U-T and the LA Times, and the Southern California editions of the Wall Street Journal, and New York Times through Los Angeles' Olympic Printing Plant.

The computer virus caused problems for newspapers connected to Tribune Publishing, the company confirmed this weekend, compromising software crucial to the news production and printing process.

"We apologize to our customers for this inconvenience".

Media company's spokeswoman Marisa Kollias assured subscribers and advertising clients in a statement cited by the media that their personal details had not been compromised.

All Tribune Publishing newspapers were impacted by the malware, with the South Florida Sun Sentinel, for example, unable to produce its paper in time for Saturday delivery.

Even though the Union-Tribune is no longer owned by Tribune Publishing, Light said it is "still transitioning away from the Tribune systems". Under an ongoing transition agreement, Tribune Publishing, formerly known as Tronc, continues to print the two West Coast newspapers and provide other essential services.

Tribune Publishing says a computer virus disrupted production of the Chicago Tribune and its other newspapers across the country, the Chicago Tribune reports. "We are working diligently to resolve this matter".

The print editions of the Chicago Tribune, Lake County News-Sun, Post-Tribune, Hartford Courant, Baltimore Sun, Capital Gazette, and Carroll County Times were published Saturday without paid death notices and classified ads, according to the Chicago Tribune, Hartford Courant, and Baltimore Sun.

10News received multiple calls from viewers who did not receive the Saturday edition of the paper. The systems are shared by the Times and Union-Tribune.
