  • Former US President George Bush dies at age 94, family spokesman says

The family also thanked those who cared for and prayed for their beloved dad in recent days.

Former US President Barack Obama says America has lost a patriot and humble servant in George Herbert Walker Bush.

A website was also created to honor the former president. Being the youngest pilot in the navy when he began flying, he flew 58 combat missions during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in action.

Before that, he served as vice president under Ronald Reagan from 1981 to 1989.

Since exiting the highest office, his love of life and family was never more visible.

At the time of his death, Bush was the American president to have lived the longest.

In his retirement years, Bush watched as one of his sons, George W. Bush, twice won the presidency, only the second time in USA history that a father and son both became the US leaders.

Mr Bush only served one term as President.

He had joined politics in 1964 after starting a Texan oil business and becoming a millionaire by the age of 40.

Bush famously vowed: "This will not stand, this aggression against Kuwait". Around 425,000 U.S. troops and 118,000 coalition forces were mobilized for weeks of aerial strikes and a 100-hour ground battle.

Domestically, however, the economy stalled and Bush broke his pledge not to raise taxes in order to reach a budget deal with Democrats - a cardinal sin in the eyes of Republicans. He was an equal ally of former election foe President Bill Clinton in helping victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma through the One America Appeal.

Another son, Jeb - a former Florida governor - made an unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination in 2016.
