The United States Postal Services has announced all retail locations will be closed Wednesday to honor former President George H.W. Bush.

US President Donald Trump (R) and First Lady Melania Trump pay their respects as the remains of former US President George HW Bush lie in state in the US Capitol.

President Donald Trump and George P. Bush's father, Jeb, engaged in a vitriolic primary rivalry during the 2016 campaign, and Trump has mocked and criticized the legacies of both Presidents Bush.

Eulogies will be offered by former President George W. Bush, former Sen.

A Connecticut Yankee from a wealthy family who moved to Texas to be an oilman, Bush has been eulogized as a president with a keen sense of civility and duty.

Attending the funeral will be President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump, along with other former leaders and outstanding figures in United States public life, including members of the Cabinet and the Supreme Court. Senator John Barrasso accompanied the Trumps into the rotunda, where the public will be able to pay their respects to the late president until his funeral on Wednesday.

As a specially-trained service dog, Sully was able to assist Bush, who was suffering from Parkinson's in his later years, by opening doors and being able to get help, should the former president have needed it.

Afterwards, Bush's coffin will be transported to Houston, where his family members will be able to say their last goodbyes before he is interred at his presidential library in College Station, Texas, where his wife Barbara, who died in April, is buried.

Like Bush, Dole is a World War II veteran.

Trump tweeted Wednesday that the day marked "a celebration for a great man who has led a long and distinguished life".

Among them was the former US President's prominent friend - Sully, his service dog.

Cannon fire roared again outside the Capitol as the sun sank and the younger President Bush stood with his hand over his heart, watching the casket's procession up the steps.

As of Monday morning, all living Presidents are expected to attend Bush's funeral on Wednesday at the Washington National Cathedral.

Bush's service dog, a young Labrador retriever named "Sully", also walked past the casket and sat near it briefly.

"We'll be spending three days of mourning and three days of celebrating a really great man's life", Trump said in Argentina where he was attending the G20 summit. His death also reduces membership in the ex-presidents' club to four: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
