Apple has plans to create 20,000 jobs in the United States, including 1,000 new jobs in San Diego, over the next five years.

Apple said it plans to invest $10 billion in United States data centers over the next five years, including $4.5 billion this year and next.

Apple's lengthy blog post about the expansions went into some detail on the new Austin campus-it will be located in North Austin and it will occupy 133 acres.

Jobs at the facility will include "a broad range of functions, including engineering, R&D, operations, finance, sales and customer support", the company said.

The Austin expansion will continue Apple's trend of building offices that run entirely on renewable energy.

Further facilities will also be established in Culver City, Seattle and San Diego, and existing sites in Pittsburgh and Boulder will be expanded over the next three years.

This year, Apple said it added 6,000 jobs to its American workforce, where it now employs 90,000.

The Austin announcement comes almost a year after Apple disclosed it would canvas the US for another location.

Cities around the country offered financial incentives in an attempt to land Apple's new campus, but Cook avoided a high-profile competition that pitted them against one another, as Amazon had before deciding to build huge new offices in NY and Virginia.

Neither Apple nor state business recruiters responded to requests for comment on the company's decision to bypass North Carolina.

"Talent, creativity and tomorrow's breakthrough ideas aren't limited by region or ZIP code", Cook said in a statement.

The tech giant, which is a force in computers and phones but also has interests in entertainment and autonomous vehicles, said in January it planned to add 20,000 jobs in the USA and would site a third campus outside its home base of Cuptertino, Calif., and a sprawling operation in Austin, Texas. Each will be home to more than 1,000 employees. The company now employees 90,000 people across the United States. All in all, Apple is aiming to create as much as 20,000 new jobs by 2023.

At a press conference this morning, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott thanked Apple for its "Texas-sized investment" and said the state would continue to invest in its universities so "Apple will have access to the premier workforce in the entire world".

Apple said it plans to invest $10bn in USA data centers over the next five years, including $4.5bn this year and next.

Amazon isn't the only tech giant making major expansions in the US.

"Apple and Austin share a creative spark and a commitment to getting big things done", says Austin Mayor Steve Adler.
