  • Tsunami warning in Alaska over Anchorage earthquake

Back-to-back earthquakes measuring 7.0 and 5.8 rocked buildings and buckled roads Friday morning in Anchorage.

Wait 1 second to continue.

"Everyone just sprinted out of the coffee shop I was at in Anchorage in the middle of a huge natural disaster", Nat Herz, a reporter with news portal Alaska's Energy Desk, posted on Twitter.

With the earthquake's aftershocks, the National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for Alaska's Cook Inlet region.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said President Donald Trump had been briefed about the quake and was monitoring damage reports.

Collapsed roads, cracked buildings, shelves and cupboards emptied of contents: a powerful 7.0-magnitude natural disaster rocked southern Alaska on Friday morning, creating panic in Anchorage, the main city of this American state, yet accustomed to earthquakes.

"It was very loud when it came", Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz said. Locals have also shared images of buildings on fire in the aftermath.

At present, three overnight emergency shelters in Anchorage, Chugiak and Wasilla have been opened by the Red Cross of Alaska.

‎ About two and a half hours after the quake, the utility said approximately 7,000-10,000 customers ‎were still without power.‎.

Alaska has recorded earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 7 to 8 at least once a year on average since 1900, according to the state government website.

Earlier this afternoon a magnitude 7.0 quake struck 12 kilometers deep outside of Anchorage, Alaska. The agency also was planning to conduct bridge inspections. "Anchorage has a population of around 300,000, while there are numerous large population centers in California".

Anchorage Police Chief Justin Doll said he had been told that parts of Glenn Highway, a scenic route that runs northeast out of the city past farms, mountains and glaciers, had "completely disappeared".

"It will take months for the rate of the aftershocks, the rate at which they're occurring, to drop down to what you would consider background levels", he said, although the vast majority were too small to cause damage.

Blair Braverman was staying in a hotel with her husband when the quake hit.

David Harper was in a coffee shop when the quake began and said the sound intensified and sounded "like the building was just going to fall apart". The tsunami it triggered claimed about 130 lives. Harper said the quake was "significant enough that the people who were outside were actively hugging each other".
