No mad dogs at United and ‘simplicity is genius’, says Mourinho

Manchester United's Premier League woes continue after a turgid 2-2 draw away against Southampton.

Jose Mourinho saw another night of embarrassment averted as his side came from 2-0 down to earn a point at Southampton but he was left bemoaning the lack of "mad dogs" in his squad.

Still seventh in the table, the Red Devils could end the weekend nine points off the top four.

The opener was the sixth time this season that United have conceded a goal in the first 15 minutes of a match.

Just after the half hour mark he did well to collect a forward pass and turn past Maya Yoshida before crossing for the unmarked Lukaku, who drove his first goal in seven games over Alex McCarthy and high into the net.

Ever since Mourinho's spell at Real Madrid, he appears to have picked one player to battle with in order to lay down his authority, with mixed results: Iker, Casillas, Eden Hazard, now Paul Pogba. "(Not winning) has to do with the characteristics of the players. And when the players don't understand that simplicity is genius, especially in some parts of the pitch, and they keep and keep and keep in going to complicated football it's hard to have that continuity'.

'We lost so many balls in midfield, that was hard to have that continuity, ' Mourinho said in a post-match interview.

"With all the respect, we don't have many mad dogs that bite the ball and press all the time we don't have many people with that spirit".

"I thought he was outstanding today", Mourinho added.

"What we needed to improve in this game was simplicity in midfield".

I mean. this pretty much sums it up so far for United. "And when he does that it's obviously another goal".
