  • Rare suicide car bombing kills at least three people in Iran

Footage showed smoke rising over the city.

The Tasnim news agency said there were reports that women and children were among the injured. The suicide attacker, driving a vehicle loaded with explosives, drove up to the police headquarters, according to General Mohammad Pakpour of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

While rare, Iran has been targeted by armed groups in recent years.

Ansar al-Furqan, a Sunni jihadi group, clamed credit for the attack.

Mohammad Hadi Marashi, deputy governor for security affairs, told state TV that two police officers were killed in the attack.

In a message, Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri also said such terror attacks are meant to create a rift within the united ranks of Iranian people, but they are doomed to failure and will only strengthen the nation's national unity and convergence.

TV also reported shooting in the area, which is located in the mainly Sunni province of Sistan-Baluchestan that has always been plagued by unrest from both drug smuggling gangs and separatist militants.

Al-Furqan in 2017 claimed responsibility for bombing an oil pipeline in the southwestern province of Khuzestan. He said no group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, adding that the various aspects of the attack would soon come to light after thorough investigation is concluded.

Tehran accuses its Sunni-led regional rival Saudi Arabia and the United States of funding most of these groups, a charge that Riyadh and Washington deny.

Meanwhile, Rahmdel Bameri, caretaker of the Governor's Office in Chabahar County, underlined the strategic significance of the city as a free trade zone, which has a deep-water port on the Sea of Oman.

Washington has granted exceptions to some U.S. sanctions on Iran for the project.

India has said it is ready to invest up to $500m in the development of the port that is key to its ambitions to chart a route to landlocked Central Asian countries and Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan.

"Iran WILL bring terrorists and their masters to justice", the Iranian minister underlined.

Such acts of violence will also "boost the Islamic Republic of Iran's resolve to fight terrorism", said Jahangiri, calling for all-out efforts to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
