  • Dylan Collier scored the crucial try in the final to beat the USA

The New Zealand Black Ferns claimed the gold medal with a comfortable 26-14 victory over Canada in the final.

Captain Sarah Goss scored three tries as New Zealand finished ideal in pool play on day one of the Dubai Sevens.

Michaela Blyde, who notched up her 100th World Series try in Dubai, nabbed a hat trick in the semi final win against US, setting up a Final against Canada.

New Zealand won all three of their games on the opening day of the second stage of the HSBC World Rugby Women's Sevens Series to stay on track for their fifth successive title from the competition.

It was the first time since 2009 that New Zealand have won in Dubai, and they achieved it without four first choice players who were injured before the final. Canada responded with a lung-busting run from Julia Greenshields that cut the New Zealand advantage to 19-14 with just over four minutes remaining.

There was to be no first Dubai title for United States, though, as tries by Dylan Collier and Ngarohi McGarvey-Black ensured it would be New Zealand celebrating a long-awaited sixth Dubai title.

ZIMBABWE'S Sevens rugby team failed to pick a win in their opening two Pool matches on the opening day of the Dubai Sevens despite putting on a commendable display against their more experienced neighbours South Africa and Argentina yesterday.

They had previously beaten Fiji 38-7 and Spain 29-7, and will now play Ireland in the quarter-final.

New Zealand and England went unbeaten in winning the other two groups. Of course, it has to be remembered that the team is in a rebuilding phase following the departure of several stalwarts, but they will be mightily disappointed with a sixth-place finish in Dubai. Connor Braid and Luke McCloskey, both of Victoria, made an impact in the loss to the Aussies with Oak Bay High-grad Braid scoring two tries and SMUS-grad McCloskey one try.

Canada went 1-2 Friday, losing 26-12 to England and 31-19 to Australia before beating Japan 27-7. Sam Pecqueur scored a try with seconds left for Scotland to trail by only 21-19, then Jamie Farndale appeared to touch down the victor, but it was disallowed because he stepped out of bounds.

Earlier, Samoa set up a Challenge Trophy final against France.

"There were some moments particularly in that last game that were to and fro", said Australian men's coach Tim Walsh.

The Canadian men's pre-season preparations were interrupted by a labour dispute with Rugby Canada.
