  • Israel denies one of its fighter jets was downed

Israeli strikes on Syria "have been cut nearly to zero" since a Russian plane was shot down near Latakia, two months ago, a former head of Military Intelligence said, earlier Thursday.

Syrian media have reported that air defenses were activated during an enemy strike on targets in the al-Kiswah region south of Damascus.

Last week IDF sources said security personnel reported the presence of some 20,000 Iranian-trained Syrian armed forces in the Syrian Golan Heights, possibly preparing for a conflict with Israel.

Syria initially reported that they had shot down a hostile force, though Israel says nothing was hit by the Syrian fire.

Another missile hit the area of Harfa, near the Israeli border, where there is a Syrian military base, the UK-based monitor said.

"Air defense intercepts hostile targets over al-Kiswah and downed them", a military source was quoted as saying by Syria's SANA news outlet.

Israel has reportedly carried out airstrikes in Southern Syria targeting Iranian militias, in its first publicised strike since September.

The area south of Damascus has been targeted by alleged Israeli strikes in the past.

The report said among the areas hit was the countryside of Kisweh, home to military bases, just south of Damascus.

Iran and Russian Federation are the government's key allies in the civil war that has raved Syria since 2011, and Moscow's intervention in 2015 dramatically turned the tables against the rebels.

Moscow pinned responsibility for the downing on Israel, saying its fighter jet used the larger Russian one for cover, an allegation Israel disputed.

The bill would facilitate the continued use of economic sanctions and visa restrictions to hold accountable members of the Syrian government, the White House statement added.

Israel has repeatedly warned that it will act to prevent Iran from consolidating itself militarily in Syria, and continue to strike weapons convoys en route from Tehran to Hezbollah.

Moscow blamed Israel for the incident and supplied Damascus with the advanced S-300 air defense system - something it had previously refrained from doing following requests from Jerusalem.
