A planned meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi was scrapped and replaced by a phone call, the premier's office said.

Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and other senior White House aides made a surprise visit to soldiers at Al Asad Air Base in Iraq on Wednesday.

He said the U.S. could use Iraq as a regional launching pad to carry out operations against the ISIS and Syria.

Trump, who has been harshly criticized for not visiting US forces in any combat zone since becoming president in January 2017, used the Iraq visit to defend his decision to withdraw 2,000 forces from neighboring Syria, saying that the Islamic State (IS) extremist group is "very almost defeated" and any resurgence could be handled by USA troops in Iraq.

"Parliament must clearly and urgently express its view about the ongoing American violations of Iraqi sovereignty", said MP Salam al-Shimiri, loyal to the populist cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

Both visited American troops in the country, with Obama meeting them inside a palace built by Saddam Hussein in Baghdad, while Trump visited an air base.

US troops are stationed in Iraq as part of the coalition against the Islamic State group.

Iraqi politicians told the Reuters news agency that the pair had disagreed over the venue, with Trump asking to meet at the Ain al-Asad air base, an offer which Abdul Mahdi declined.

Sanders emphasised that President Trump and the prime minister had a good call and that Trump invited the prime minister to visit the White House and the prime minister accepted.

The Wednesday visit, Trump's first with U.S. troops in a conflict zone since he took office two years ago, came days after a shock decision to pull all American troops from neighbouring Syria. "I gave our generals six more months in Syria [in 2016], and that was a year and a half ago, they said they need six more months and another six more months, and another, and I said no". Let's go. Take more time.' Constantly giving them more time.

As part of the visit, Trump posted a video on Twitter posing with US Navy Seals allegedly revealing the deployment of the special ops team in the country. "Frankly, it's ridiculous", Trump added.

Trump delivered a speech to around 100 uniformed service members at an air base west of Baghdad where he defended his decision to pull American troops out of Syria. "Can someone tell me why @FLOTUS got off of Marine One without trousers and shoes and wearing sunglasses at night? I got you a big one", he said.

Trump said in Iraq that some of the United States troops from Syria "will come here for a stay, but a lot of them are going to be going back home". "We're respected again as a nation", Mr Trump said.

New Delhi, with billions of dollars in developmental investment, also banks on the US-led worldwide coalition forces for much of its reconstruction effort in the country, which started years ago on the watch of president George W Bush and continue through president Barack Obama's tenure to president Trump.

His militia is represented in Parliament by the Binaa bloc, a rival coalition to Mr al-Sadr's Islah.

The US military presence in Iraq also aids "Israel's desire to block the Tehran-Beirut route" and helps offset Iran's strengthening presence in the region, he said.
