United Kingdom prime minister discusses Kashoggi killing with Saudi Crown Prince

  • Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman greet each other at the G20 Leaders' Summit in Buenos Aires

Putin and the Crown Prince are slated to meet during the annual gathering to talk about Khashoggi's murder and oil production.

Earlier on Friday, Prince Mohammed met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and told him about plans to scale up investments in India's tech, farm and energy sectors, an Indian official and the Saudi news agency (SPA) said on Friday.

The decision of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) to attend the G20 summit in Buenos Aires and, immediately before that, make a series of visits to friendly Arab states is evidence that he considers his personal position secure following the acknowledgement that journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, on 2 October.

"They exchanged pleasantries at the leaders' session as he did with almost every leader in attendance", a senior White House official said.

Prince Mohammed's presence at the worldwide summit has been contentious following the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at a Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October.

The Saudi Gazette newspaper posted a video of the meeting online showing the two speaking in hushed tones with their heads close together.

Amidst heightened global scrutiny of the young Saudi leader following his alleged role in the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, MBS was all smiles when he greeted the Russian strongman in Argentina on Friday.

There were also warm handshakes for the crown prince from President Trump and his daughter Ivanka on the first day of a summit where some had hoped he would be treated as a pariah.

He might have been standing on the fringes of the traditional "family photo" at the Group of 20 summit in Argentina, but Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman got lots of attention.

Macron continued the conversation, saying he is "a man of my word".

Saudi senior royals have not demonstrated an ability to reduce the influence of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS); King Salman has continued backing his son.

Mr. Trump canceled his previously scheduled meeting with Putin on Thursday after he was briefed on the incident. Trump cited Putin's recent provocations against Ukraine, although the optics of him meeting the Russian leader at a time of renewed focus on his business dealings with Moscow were potentially not great.

Ms Merkel said she would address the Russia/Ukraine stand-off during their discussions, a crisis she has blamed "entirely" on Russia.

With such a keen focus on the US President's trade policies, Mr Trump started the summit with what he certainly considers a win.
